About Us
in the past and now
History
The business was founded in 1931 by two friends, Leslie Henton & Charles Chattell. It was a year when the depression was in force and undoubtedly a brave venture.
The first premises, selling ironmongery, was located at 73 High Rd, Beeston in Nottingham. They opened a further two shops, one on Derby Road in Lenton and the other on Radcliffe Road in West Bridgford.
Before the start of World War Two they had five shops. It was just before the war that Leslie Henton developed an interest in horticultural machinery and started operating from the Radcliffe Road premises.
In 1949 the two partners consolidated their retail premises into one. A large house next to their existing
premises on Radcliffe Road was converted to a showroom.
At the same time they purchased a 99 year lease for the premises known as London Road.
The London Road premises of just 5,000sq ft was the start of the company destined to become the major independent Grass Machinery Dealer and Distributor in the UK.
Today Henton & Chattell have a turnover of nearly £15,000,000 and employ sixty-five people. Our premises have expanded along Iremonger Road.
